In SharePoint publishing there are two main templates that are used – master pages and page layouts. They are what define the look and feel of a SharePoint site where master pages contain controls that are shared across multiple pages and page layouts, contain field controls and Web Parts.
Master pages are used to create a consistent design across an entire site for example, ensuring navigational controls remain the same on all pages and that the logo is placed in the same place throughout.
The ‘primary master page’ displays the elements that are seen when the user navigates through the site pages. The individual pages are handled as ‘content pages’ and when they are viewed, they are combined with the master page layout and elements.
The master page can be customised through the SharePoint Designer for a ‘no code’ method.
Create the page layout content type
When wanting to publish information in a web page format in a form that content owners can produce the pages themselves, you need to use publishing pages to enable browser-based editing. Each one of these publishing pages are associated with a page layout which, as the name suggests, controls the way such pages look.
Before you can create a page layout, you must create the page layout content type – defining how contributors should enter each type of content. As content types are entered to the top-level site, they are available to all the sub sites within that collection.
This opens the Site Content Type page where you can define how information is entered, displayed and displayed.
Settings – these options are used to make overall changes for example, you can associate a Workflow with this content type.
Columns – click the Name column so that you can change the type of field or status. These columns become available as fields in the publishing page. The columns are in the Toolbox task pane.
Add from existing site columns – this can be used to add data fields from an existing list of available fields.
Add from new site column – this can be used to add your own data fields.
Column order – this changes the order in which fields are presented to the user.
Create a page layout
Now you can create a page layout from the content type you have created and therefore, will have all the columns specified available for use.
Create a publishing page from the created page layout
The new page created can be edited in the browser or through the page layout. To make it visible to all site visitors it must be published.
