Losing a phone is not just like losing any piece of technology. Phones are not just devices that you use practically, but are responsible for a whole range of our day-to-day tasks including sentimental and personal ones (like taking pictures on a night out) and private and important ones (like checking our bank account). When you lose your phone it can leave you cut off from your contacts and without a lot of the functions that you rely on day-to-day, but it can also potentially put you at risk of having your personal information stolen and used against you.
As always then, the best cure is prevention, which means making sure that your phone is safe and that it’s not likely to go missing in the first place. Here we will look at some ways you can do that.
Carry a Bag
Keeping your phone in a bag rather than a pocket is a great idea to help keep it safe. This is something that many women do, but most men are reluctant to try. Put your reservations to one side though – as leaving your phone in your pocket will mean it’s more likely to slip out unnoticed when you’re sitting down, or get stolen surreptitiously when you’re walking through town.
Carry a shoulder bag and then keep your phone in a zipped compartment. It will be tough to reach but you’ll still be able to feel it vibrate.
Get a Lanyard
If you’re the kind of person who is prone to losing things, then it may be worth investing in a lanyard. This will allow you to attach your phone by a plastic chord to the inside of your bag, or at least to your belt if you really do want to keep it in your pocket. This way you can’t physically drop your phone without noticing and it will be incredibly difficult for anyone to sneak it out of your pocket too.
Get the Right Case
Getting the right case for your phone can also help you to avoid losing it. Something slightly thicker and heavier might not look so sleek, but it will ensure that it fits more snuggly in your bag or pocket which will in turn make it harder to slip out.
Keep it in the Same Place
Phones don’t just go missing on the bus, sometimes we lose them around the house too (and when visiting friends). Make a habit of putting your phone in the same place whenever you put it down, and that way it will be much harder to misplace.
Download the Right Software
These methods will help you avoid your phone going missing, but in case it does it’s useful to have a backup plan. Using the Lookout app, you can track your phone online, see where it was last in use, and even get it to email pictures of people who are trying to open it. Using Avast on the other hand, you can remotely wipe your phone of all data ensuring that it’s no longer a security risk.
Consider every eventuality when thinking about your phone security and make sure it’s not only difficult to steal or lose, but also protected in the eventuality that it should go missing.

Have never lost a phone myself, but I know many who seem to do it on a regular basis. Good post!
Can’t wait until iOS 7 and activation lock. If the fingerprint scanner rumor is true the next generation of iOS devices will make it even more difficult for thieves.
Yeah, I recently had my phone robbed out of a car. I know I won’t get it back but it’d be nice to know that the thieves can’t use it for themselves!
