Ryan is a keen gamer working for cheap vans company NVC who until last weekend didn’t believe that steering wheels for gaming were any good.
A lot of people ask the question, is buying a steering wheel for a games console really worth the costs involved? Can it really improve the way you play the game and will it improve your skills? I was one of the people on the negative side of the argument saying that steering wheels really didn’t help at all and all they ended up doing was to send you drifting out of control and out of the track.
However, last weekend I got pretty bored and decided to just go out on a whim and purchase Shift 2 and whilst I was at it I thought I would buy a steering wheel too!
Has My Mind Been Changed?
The last time I owned a steering wheel was back in the day of the PS2 and I have to say I wasn’t impressed by the way it performed. To be fair, it was a very cheap steering wheel and it is most likely because of this that I had come to the conclusion that steering wheels sucked. I took a risk in buying a steering wheel for my Xbox 360 and an expensive one too! So, was it worth it?
It had been a good 5 years since the last time I had picked up a steering wheel so I was very sceptical about paying a lot of money for one but as I was bored I did it anyway. When I got in I quickly put the wheel together and loaded up Shift 2. The initial race was shocking; I was swerving all over the place and taking out vehicles left right and centre but after a couple of races I had adjusted and started to perform better than I would normally had performed with a controller.
The same kind of thing happened when I loaded up F1 2010 and as I started I took out around 8 cars and ended up getting a ridiculous time penalty for the race. It is after this race that I discovered that you could adjust controls for a steering wheel and after this I was once again performing a lot better than I usually would.
If you have said no to steering wheels in the past it is likely because you went out and purchased a relatively cheap one. They are cheap for a reason and the best steering wheels have feedback and when you turn they will respond perfectly in the way that they are supposed to.
If you haven’t got one then I would at least try out a fair decent one to see what you think!
